October 16 is one of very few days in mathematics
when a discovery was recorded!

Happy Birthday
to the discovery by Sir William Rowan Hamilton at  Broom Bridge,
Dublin, Ireland
October 16, 1843

In 1989 the Department of Mathematics at Maynooth, near Dublin, Ireland initiated the annual Quarternion Walk on the anniversary of their discovery.  The Walk starts at Dunsink Observatory and ends at Broom Bridge where Sir William Rowan Hamilton scratched a now famous formula.
